Istanbul In Turkey - An Old World Comes Alive
If you like to think about the
past and all the great histories
on earth, you will experience
soon some magic time.
Istanbul in Turkey is for the
country the most populous
city, and the cultural and the
financial center, as well the
national sea port. It is located
on both sides of the Bospo-
rus. It can look over the Black
Sea on the one side and ob-
serve on the other the Sea of
Marmara. The third sea, which
is coming in on the shores of
Istanbul, is called the Golden
Horn. Because of the ideal
location the city was for ages
the bridge between Asia and
Europe, physically and culturally. Istanbul's population is estimated to between
12 and 19 million people, what makes it the largest city in Europe, and one of the
biggest ones in the entire world.
Istanbul is Turkey's largest port, and the hub of its industry. Textiles, flour milling,
tobacco processing, cement, and glass are the city's principal manufactures.
Tourism is a growing source of income for Istanbul. About its history exist so
many events, documents and time lines, that it is impossible to give a short, but
complete picture. It is one of the oldest cities existing on this planet. It did expand
into a large and important city already long time ago. It was always a desired and
fought-for place for many warier of the ancient times, because of its ideal location.
Again - Istanbul is connected to 3 seas, and is also an established very straight
connection between Europe and Asia.
Many religious artifacts
and ruins tell the stories
of another victory of
the next warier. Istan-
bul exists since over
2500 years, and the
main political and
religious influences
came about with ...
... the legend says, that
a Greek with the name
Byzas, a leader of the
Greeks from the city
Megara, did build the
city in 657 BC. In AD
196 the Roman Sep-
timus Severus razed
the town and rebuilt it.
In 330 AD Constantine the Great dictated it and called it "New Rome". The coinage,
nevertheless continued to be stamped Byzantinum, until he ordered the substitu-
tion of Constantinopolis. In the 1300th century the Arabs took over and gave the
city the name "eis ten polin", which comes from the Greek and means "in the city".
Out of that it became later the name Istanbul and got officially acknowledged by
the Turkish Post Office in 1930. Though many people still know and like to use
the last name Constantinople.
What happened in all centuries to this city did
also happen to many other historical places,
where every other warier destroyed the riches,
believes and buildings of the last one and did
build new ones of his own believes, with some
new architecture for churches and other,
showing his great influence to the rest of the
world. Often only some fragments tell the long
story from the ups and downs of Istanbul.
The old city of Istanbul, which is walled, is still
there. It looks very impressive (see the photo
above). The oldest building, which remained
pretty much in an original state, is Hagia Sofia.
It got destroyed in wars and hit by several
earthquakes, but got many times repaired or
partly rebuild. So it did shrink somehow
through the times into a bit different form.
It is one of the big attractions of Istanbul,
beside the places of the Roman history and
other. But again interesting to know, that the
Romans kept Istanbul for hundreds of years
as their capital, because of the ideal location
and because of the seven hills, Istanbul is
build on. Rome, which got also build on seven
hills, all these things together became the
mystic political reason, that the leaders of
Rome had to move down to the Bosporus. The entire atmosphere of the past is
still there. It is a very surprising place of the antique, and it transmits somewhere
the feelings of all the centuries of the past. One cannot take away, what all happened.
The best is, to book a tour through the entire environment, because it is a long and
adventuress way, observing the events and historical ruins. It might become the best
lively ancient entertainment-show of your entire life.
There are today lots of tourist attractions, high class hotels, exquisite restaurants,
shops and Turkish bathe facilities - giving you some new bathing experience
(called Hammans) - and cafes, where you can smoke your water pipe (called Nargile).
Many Beaches are surrounding Istanbul and you need at least to plan for one or
better 2 weeks or more, to get a real, full picture. Don't forget enjoying the Turkish
Cousin and dine on savory in some excellent Istanbul restaurants. The best fish
sandwiches you can get at the Golden Horn. Some of the interesting city districts
to visit are Galata, Perapalas, Ortaköy, Bosphorus, Taksim, Eminönü and Sultanah-
met. Princess Islands is a popular summer resort for local people. And you can
also visit other areas like Edirne, Iznik, Bursa, Gallipoli and Troy, or even Ephesus
or Cappadocia.
A complete list with all the attractions of Istanbul, would fill another page.
The best is, to get all the information you like, as soon you are there.
It is recommended to go in summer, because it can get very cold during the end
of the year.
